Steam Achievements Overhauled With New System for DLC and Seasonal Content

Valve has introduced a significant update to the Steam client beta, revamping its achievements system to offer greater flexibility for developers and players alike. The changes allow for separate achievement sets tailored to specific content, such as DLC packs or seasonal events, and include an improved way to compare progress with friends.

Previously, unlocking all base game achievements would display a 100% completion status. However, the addition of DLC with its own achievements would reduce this percentage, a point of frustration for players aiming to maintain a perfect completion record without engaging with additional content. This update addresses that by enabling developers to create distinct achievement sets that do not impact the base game's completion percentage. This functionality extends to seasonal achievements, such as those tied to battle passes or limited-time events, ensuring that players who skip a season do not see their overall completion score affected.

The update also brings a refreshed look to the achievements page, consolidating most information into a single view that displays overall completion progress and individual achievement tracking. A notable addition is the ability to compare your achievements directly with up to three friends, a feature long present on platforms like PlayStation. This social comparison element aims to enhance the competitive and collaborative aspects of achievement hunting.

While the system is still in beta, a growing list of games have already begun to implement these new achievement sets. Among them are:

  • Against the Storm
  • Age of Wonders 4
  • American Truck Simulator
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
  • Crusader Kings III
  • DREDGE
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Flock Around
  • He is Coming
  • LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Portal 2
  • PowerWash Simulator
  • PowerWash Simulator 2
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Victoria 3

This overhaul is expected to transition from beta to a wider release within approximately a month, following a similar rollout pattern to other recent Steam client features.
