Steam Breaks Concurrent Player Record Amidst Console Sales Slump

Steam has once again set a new record for concurrent players, surpassing 43.5 million users over the weekend. This marks the second time this year the platform has achieved this milestone, following a previous peak of 42 million in January. Of the total concurrent users, over 14 million were actively playing a game simultaneously.

Growth Trajectory

The digital storefront's player count has seen consistent growth over its 23-year history. A significant surge occurred in early 2020 coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic, and the platform has continued to expand steadily since then, nearly doubling its concurrent player peak in the last six years.

Driving Games

Several titles contributed to this latest record. Counter-Strike 2 remained a top performer with a 24-hour peak of 1.4 million players, followed by Dota 2 with 1 million, and PUBG: Battlegrounds with 713,683. Newcomers also played a role, with the MMO Aion 2 reaching a peak of 397,905 players shortly after its October 5 launch. Additionally, Valve's unreleased title Deadlock saw an impressive surge, hitting an all-time high of 262,145 concurrent players following a recent patch.

Console Market Contrast

This surge in PC gaming activity stands in contrast to the current state of the console market. According to Circana data, Xbox hardware sales have fallen 33% year-to-date in August compared to the same period in 2025, while PlayStation sales have dropped 25%. This downturn is attributed to ongoing shortages of RAM and other essential hardware components, which have driven up console prices and limited availability.

The continued success of Steam, despite rising prices and scarcity of PC components like graphics cards over the past few years, highlights the platform's enduring popularity. It is possible that many users are continuing to utilize existing hardware rather than upgrading, but Valve's platform appears to be navigating these market challenges effectively.
