Steam Frame VR Headset Receives First Post-Launch Software Update

Valve has released the first post-launch software update for its Steam Frame VR headset, introducing several key improvements. The update, SteamOS 0.3.0, aims to enhance the user experience with faster charging, smoother controller tracking, and a fix for a microphone bug.

Since its launch, which has followed a reservation and waitlist system similar to the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame has been in a transitional phase between availability and widespread distribution. This initial software update addresses some of the early feedback and technical points.

One significant change is the "substantially faster" charging, particularly when the unit is off or in a sleep state. This addresses a noted limitation of the headset, where battery life was a concern, especially during extended use like playing demanding titles such as Half-Life: Alyx in its standalone mode, which could drain the battery from full in about an hour. The faster recharging should help mitigate this issue.

Additionally, the update includes improvements to controller tracking, specifically when haptics are active. This aims to provide a more stable and immersive virtual reality experience. The headset's microphone also receives attention, with a fix for a reported "garbled audio" bug.

Other notable changes in the update include improved system stability and reliability under high load, fixes for per-app motion smoothing settings, enhanced motion smoothing behavior in Half-Life: Alyx, and new VR Settings controls for dashboard visibility and play area bounds.

For developers, the update adjusts performance criteria to allow for any resolution, includes Vulkan layer fixes for increased game compatibility, and brings general system and graphics performance improvements. Valve has stated its intention to continue updating and expanding the features of its hardware, mirroring the ongoing support provided to the Steam Deck since its release.
