Steam Games Now Playable Locally on Jailbroken PlayStation 5 Consoles

A growing number of Steam PC games can now be run directly on jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, enabling local play for titles such as Portal and Left 4 Dead 2. This functionality is made possible by projects like Playden for PS5, which was recently made publicly available.

Playden operates as a Steam launcher, creating a private Windows environment through prospero-win, a port of the Wine compatibility layer for the PlayStation 5. The software supports Direct3D 11 via DXVK and Direct3D 12 games through VKD3D-Proton. It includes a separate runtime kit for graphics drivers and specific application shells for each game.

According to the project's GitHub page, Playden downloads a game, prepares it, and then launches it via a dedicated PS5 application designed for that specific title. This isolation ensures that each game's files, settings, and any potential crashes are contained within its own environment, allowing each to appear as a distinct tile on the PS5 Home screen.

One user, Cevap, shared a video demonstrating local playback of Portal on their jailbroken PS5, noting that the game ran as expected aside from issues with mouse cursor control and accessing the options menu via the ESC key. Basic controls, however, were reported to function correctly.

The developers emphasize that Playden for PS5 is currently in an early alpha state, and users should temper expectations. Despite this, the list of compatible games is extensive, featuring several prominent titles, though instability and crashes may occur. Advanced users should also be aware that logging into official Steam accounts is required, and while no account issues have been reported, the developers state that "Valve does not support third-party clients," and the risk is accepted by the user.

Getting Playden operational is described as an involved process, making it more suitable for advanced users. This development represents a significant, albeit niche, expansion of gaming possibilities on modified PlayStation hardware.
