Steam Next Fest Becomes Overwhelming, AI-Infused Nightmare

The recent Steam Next Fest, an event designed to showcase upcoming indie game demos, has devolved into a "massive disaster" due to an overwhelming number of submissions, many of which are low-quality, AI-generated "slop." This year's event featured nearly 7,100 free demos, a significant increase from previous iterations and a number that has rendered the festival unusable for many.

In years past, Steam Next Fest offered a valuable platform for developers to share their work and for players to discover new games. However, the sheer volume of submissions has made it increasingly difficult for quality titles to stand out. Data from Game Discover shows a dramatic escalation in demo numbers, from around 900 in October 2023 to approximately 4,300 in June of this year, culminating in over 7,000 for the current event. This explosion in content has transformed the festival into an "overwhelming nightmare to dig through."

Compounding the issue of quantity is the quality of many submissions. A significant portion of the demos appear to be quickly assembled, with many developers openly disclosing the use of AI for generating code and assets. This influx of "AI slop" and poorly made clones has led to a pervasive sense of disappointment among developers, critics, and players. Social media feeds are reportedly filled with expressions of defeat regarding the state of the festival, with many feeling that generative AI tools are corrupting what was once an exciting showcase.

Valve's approach to curation, relying heavily on user tags and algorithms rather than active selection, has also drawn criticism. As the number of games added to Steam continues to rise at an unprecedented rate, with more games released this year than in all of 2025 already, the problem is only expected to worsen. The increasing capability of AI coding tools suggests that future Steam Next Fests will likely be even larger and more saturated with low-effort content, painting a grim picture for the future of game discovery on the platform. With even potential competitors like Epic Games embracing AI-driven development, the outlook for a curated and quality-focused indie game showcase appears increasingly bleak.
