Valve has officially rolled out Steam's Personal Calendar feature, a tool designed to help players discover new and upcoming games. This feature, which has been in Steam Labs testing since last year, aims to enhance game discoverability on the platform.
The Personal Calendar is accessible both as a widget on the Steam store's front page and through a dedicated page. It highlights games sorted by their release dates, allowing users to filter suggestions by game tags, early access status, and wishlist inclusions. The calendar is intended to provide a quick overview of games released within the past month or scheduled to launch in the upcoming month that Steam believes users might be interested in.
According to a Steam blog post, the Personal Calendar is updated daily. It analyzes players' recently played games to identify users with similar playtime profiles. The system then examines the games those players have wishlisted or played to generate recommendations. Valve has stated that developers cannot pay for placement on this calendar, meaning the algorithm is solely responsible for determining what is displayed.
Initial exploration of the Personal Calendar reveals it suggests both prominent upcoming titles and lesser-known games. For instance, it highlighted upcoming games like "Emberville" and "Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee Remastered," alongside a Steam Early Access exit title called "Sulfur." While the algorithm's effectiveness may vary for individuals closely following new releases, the curated nature of the Personal Calendar appears more specific than Steam's existing Popular New Releases and Popular Upcoming tabs. It will be interesting to observe the extent to which Steam users adopt this new recommendation tool.
