Valve has rolled out a significant update to Steam, streamlining the process for purchasing and gifting games, and introducing new features for managing wishlists. These changes aim to make it easier for users without Steam accounts to buy games for their friends and for existing users to organize their desired titles.

Previously, individuals without a Steam account who wished to gift a game had to purchase a digital gift card for the appropriate amount. This card would then be redeemed by the recipient, who could use the funds to buy the game themselves. The new system allows non-Steam users to directly purchase individual games as gifts. Senders can share a link to their wishlist with the intended recipient, or simply enter the recipient's Steam account email address to send the gift, preserving an element of surprise. However, the system does not currently support scheduling gift deliveries in advance.

Cross-Region Gifting Improvements

The update also addresses cross-region gifting. Previously, purchasing a game for a friend in a different region could be complicated, often requiring the purchaser to manually determine the game's price in the recipient's local currency, sometimes relying on third-party tools. Now, Steam automatically calculates the game's price in the friend's region before the gift is sent. This feature requires the recipient to be on the sender's Steam friends list.

Enhanced Wishlist Functionality

Alongside gifting improvements, Steam's wishlist feature has been enhanced. Users can now categorize their wishlists, allowing for more granular control over how desired games are displayed. This enables users to share specific subsets of their wishlist, such as only upcoming titles or a curated selection of games from which a gifter can choose. Additionally, games on the wishlist that have a demo available will now be clearly marked with a green tag, and users can opt to receive notifications when a demo for a wishlisted game is released.
