Steven Spielberg's latest foray into alien encounters, "Disclosure Day," is set to premiere on Peacock on October 9th, Universal Pictures announced. The film, which arrived in theaters on June 12th, has garnered mostly favorable reviews and was a notable release of the summer.
"Disclosure Day" centers on a decades-old conspiracy surrounding humanity's interactions with extraterrestrial life. The narrative follows cybersecurity expert Daniel Kellner, portrayed by Josh O'Connor. Kellner unearths a nearly 80-year-old government cover-up of alien visitations after stealing sensitive information from the powerful corporation Wardex. This discovery puts him on the run from Wardex agents tasked with suppressing the truth.
Concurrently, Emily Blunt plays Kansas City meteorologist Margaret Fairchild, whose life becomes intertwined with the conspiracy when she unintentionally broadcasts a message in an alien language. Her path eventually crosses with Daniel's. Colman Domingo appears as Hugo Wakefield, a former participant in the conspiracy and an advocate for disclosure, who endeavors to help reveal the truth.
The film has been described as a blend of alien-contact narrative, conspiracy thriller, and chase movie. Polygon's review noted a resemblance to Spielberg's earlier works, particularly "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," praising its sense of wonder and sentimental undertones. Rather than portraying extraterrestrials solely as a threat, "Disclosure Day" emphasizes the idea that knowledge of alien life is a universal right and could profoundly alter humanity's self-perception.
