RGG Studio, known for the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, is preparing to release Stranger Than Heaven on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This new title departs from the series' traditional brawler combat, offering a slower, more strategic experience that allows players to control each of protagonist Makoto Daito's limbs independently. The game spans 50 years, commencing in San Francisco in 1915, and follows Makoto's life as he navigates personal challenges and finds a talent for music and entertainment.
Game Editions and Preorder Bonuses
Players can preorder Stranger Than Heaven in several editions. The Standard Edition includes the base game. The Digital Deluxe Edition bundles the base game with additional digital content: an Original Outfit (Makoto Daito), a set of four new weapons, a set of four new skilled performers, a set of three new stage production items, a special promotional poster, an in-game record player for the soundtrack, and an electronic camera.
The Collector's Edition expands upon the Digital Deluxe Edition by including physical items alongside all the digital extras. Physical contents include a vinyl record, a Steelbook case, and a Collector's Edition box. The digital items within the Collector's Edition mirror those of the Digital Deluxe Edition, featuring the Original Outfit, four weapons, four performers, three stage production items, a promotional poster, a record player, and an electronic camera.
Preordering Stranger Than Heaven anywhere will grant players a free in-game item. Specifically, physical copies of the Standard Edition preordered at Amazon for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X will also include a free poster.
A New Saga from RGG Studio
Stranger Than Heaven's narrative begins with Makoto Daito as a child in 1915 San Francisco. As the son of an American father and a Japanese mother, Makoto faces alienation before traveling to Japan after losing his parents. The game chronicles his journey across various Japanese cities, including Fukuoka in 1915, Hiroshima in 1929, and Osaka in 1943, as he develops his musical talents and produces shows. The game's combat system emphasizes methodical strategy, with players managing punches via bumpers and kicks via triggers, while also allowing for the use of environmental weapons and dual-wielding.
The game is also notable for featuring appearances from musical artists Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur, details of which were further explored in a hands-on preview.
