Stranger Than Heaven, the upcoming street-brawler from RGG Studio, will include optional in-game assists designed to make its challenging new combat system more accessible, the developer confirmed in a recent interview.
In a hands-on preview, the game's parry-based combat was described as "demanding," requiring players to pay close attention to attack animations for both timing and directional accuracy. This approach contrasts with the more traditional button-mashing combat of previous RGG Studio titles like Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Lost Judgment.
Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto stated that based on feedback from players who experienced the game at various shows, RGG Studio has refined details such as difficulty balance and control responsiveness. "We've also included difficulty settings and provided plenty of support features, such as cheat items that increase health regeneration," Sakamoto said. "We believe that if we offer enough support for action-game beginners, it will give them the chance to play through to the very end."
Sakamoto expressed hope that with perseverance and the game's lengthy tutorial phase, most players will eventually come to enjoy the new mechanics. For those seeking a more difficult experience, the highest difficulty setting is noted as being "extremely challenging." However, the "cheat items" are intended to allow players who wish to focus on the game's narrative and side activities without mastering the combat to still enjoy the experience.
These assist items function as "handicap" items that are worn as a garment and automatically restore health or provide other perks. Sakamoto explained that while these items are available from the start of the game, their visual presence means "anyone watching your gameplay screen will immediately notice you’re wearing them."
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on January 15, 2027.
