Netflix is developing a live-action television series based on Atlus' Persona role-playing game franchise, according to a report from Variety. The adaptation is being handled by Story Kitchen, the production company behind the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, and 21 Laps, the production company founded by Shawn Levy that produced Stranger Things.
Christopher Monfette is attached to write the series and serve as executive producer and showrunner. Monfette's previous writing and producing credits include Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and 9-1-1. He is also working on Marvel Television's upcoming VisionQuest for Disney Plus.
This move by Netflix highlights its ongoing investment in video game adaptations. The streamer has previously adapted Riot Games' League of Legends into the animated series Arcane and produced animated series based on Castlevania, Cyberpunk 2077, Devil May Cry, and Tomb Raider. Netflix's live-action video game adaptations have seen mixed success, with the Resident Evil series being canceled after one season and a BioShock movie still in development.
The Persona franchise, which began in 1996 with the original PlayStation release, has grown to include four mainline sequels and numerous spinoffs. The most recent mainline entry, Persona 5, launched in 2016. Persona 6 was announced in early June but does not yet have a release date.
The core concept of Persona, which typically follows Japanese high school students balancing daily life with supernatural adventures and battles using summoned entities called Personas, is seen as well-suited for television adaptation. Atlus' next release related to the franchise will be Persona 4: Revival, a remaster of the 2008 game, scheduled to launch on February 18, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
