Street Fighter Movie's Ending Explained: A Non-Ending and a Mid-Credits Scene

The recent live-action Street Fighter film, the third cinematic attempt to adapt the iconic fighting game franchise, concludes with an ending that deliberately leaves much unresolved, followed by an animated mid-credits scene that sets up a potential sequel. The movie focuses on the reunion of old friends Ken and Ryu, who are drawn into the second World Warrior tournament orchestrated by M. Bison, the dictator of Shadaloo. Bison's true motive is to harness Ryu's "Hado Power" for himself.

The tournament itself takes a backseat to Bison's machinations. While Ken secures victories against Balrog and Dhalsim, other significant fights, such as Guile versus Vega and Zangief's participation, are either unseen or relegated to brief on-screen mentions. Several contenders, including Ryu and Vega, forfeit their matches due to Bison's influence, leading to Joe, a character with minimal prior screen time, being declared the tournament's winner by default. Ken ultimately forfeits his final match against Joe to rescue Ryu.

Within the narrative, Joe experiences a rapid rise and fall. After being announced as the tournament winner, he is quickly killed by Akuma, who emerges expecting to face Ryu. Akuma's arrival and subsequent confrontation with Ryu are pivotal. Ryu, fearing his own inner darkness that previously led to him overpowering Sagat, battles Akuma. Under Akuma's encouragement, Ryu succumbs to his "Evil Ryu" persona, transforming his gi to black. He incapacitates both Dan and Chun-Li before Ken intervenes with a Hadouken, reverting Ryu to his normal state. This resolution, however, comes abruptly, with Ken's signature move seemingly enough to quell Ryu's dark impulses.

Following this, Bison and his associates, including Vega, Juli, and Cammy, escape with the defeated Akuma. The heroes attempt to pursue, but Cammy destroys Chun-Li's van with a rocket launcher, forcing them to find an alternative way to give chase. The film then abruptly ends, with the main characters attempting to hitchhike. They are eventually picked up by Guile and Dhalsim, who were also apparently on a mission to stop Bison. The group drives off into the sunset, singing "It's Raining Men," leaving any confrontation with Bison and unresolved rivalries, like Chun-Li versus Cammy, for a potential sequel.

Mid-Credits Scene

The film's conclusion is followed by an animated mid-credits scene. This sequence revisits the events of the first World Warrior tournament, showing Ryu's victory over Sagat through his "Evil Ryu" powers, an attack that left Sagat with a prominent scar. The scene then jumps to years later, where a scarred Sagat is seen meditating. Bison, accompanied by Vega, Juli, and Cammy, appears before Sagat, strongly implying Sagat will join Bison's forces in a future installment, likely seeking revenge against Ryu.

This setup leaves the narrative wide open, with the fate of Bison and the potential for a rematch between Ryu and Sagat, as well as the resolution of other character arcs, deferred to a subsequent film.
