Director Kitao Sakurai has confirmed that work has begun on a script for a sequel to the upcoming Street Fighter movie. However, Sakurai emphasized in a recent interview that the greenlighting of a follow-up film is contingent upon the performance of the first movie.
Sakurai explained that while ideas for continuing Ryu and Ken's story beyond the events of the second World Warrior Tournament are being developed and written, he is hesitant to make concrete promises. He indicated that audience reception and support for the current film's narrative vision will be crucial factors in determining if a sequel moves forward.
While the cast has expressed high hopes for a sequel, they also acknowledge that audience interest and box office success are essential for justifying another installment. Early feedback on the film has been positive, particularly regarding its planned animated sequences that will explore the backstory of Ryu and Ken's mentor, Gouken, and his brother, Akuma. The art style and animation have been praised, though the absence of Sagat from marketing materials has sparked community speculation about his potential role in a future film.
This project follows Capcom's recent Resident Evil adaptation, which received a mixed but generally positive reception from audiences and critics. However, the director of that film has stated he will not pursue further franchise work. The Street Fighter movie is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026.
