The recent live-action adaptation of Street Fighter has left some of its cast wanting more, particularly regarding the film's conclusion. Callina Liang, who portrays Chun-Li in the movie, recently shared her candid feelings about the film's abrupt ending, admitting she is "a little bit" disappointed that the antagonist, M. Bison, escapes justice.
In the film, M. Bison orchestrates a tournament to draw out the fighter Ryu, intending to steal his power. Chun-Li infiltrates Bison's operation, driven by a personal vendetta for the death of her father. However, the movie culminates with M. Bison defeating Chun-Li and ultimately getting away, leaving her quest for revenge unfulfilled. This cliffhanger ending has been a point of discussion, and Liang echoed viewer sentiments in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
"Oh, man. Honestly, a little bit," Liang responded when asked about her disappointment. She expressed hope for a potential sequel where Chun-Li could finally confront and defeat M. Bison, envisioning such a showdown as "epic."
Liang also reflected on Chun-Li's decision not to pursue M. Bison after opportunities arose within the film, suggesting her character may have been hesitant to face the emotional aftermath of achieving her revenge. "She probably didn’t want her mission to end just yet. She was probably afraid to confront what would come for her, mentally, once it was all over," Liang speculated.
The actress also touched upon a scene where Chun-Li is branded, revealing that an earlier version of the script involved a more graphic outcome. Initially, Chun-Li was intended to sever a finger, but the filmmakers opted for branding to maintain a more streamlined narrative and avoid potential continuity issues in future installments.
Despite the unresolved ending, Street Fighter is now playing in theaters, offering audiences a mix of action and 90s nostalgia.
