Unknown Worlds is releasing the 1.1 Early Access update for Subnautica 2 today, July 8. Titled "Adaptive Measures," this update focuses on enhancing the biomods system, introducing new biolabs early in the game for easier access to mod swapping. Players will later be able to scan creatures to unlock additional passive biomod slots, allowing for the use of multiple passive biomods simultaneously.

A significant change involves creature flinches. Most creatures now exhibit clearer reactions when hit by the Survival Multitool, recoiling before fleeing. This provides players with visual feedback on the impact of their actions. Additionally, the Sonic Resonator has been improved to better communicate a creature's stunned state.

These adjustments are intended to address player feedback regarding creature "mitigation," a topic that has frequently surfaced due to the inability to kill predators in the game. While Unknown Worlds has committed to providing players with more ways to deal with aggressive fauna, the developers have stated that killing creatures will not be an option.

The update also refines blight encounters to offer a smoother transition from passive to aggressive behaviors, aiming to reduce player surprise during attacks. Gameplay around wrecks has been improved with added puzzle elements, enhanced gameplay, and better visual consistency. The PDA has been updated for improved clarity, and players will gain access to a new personal storage option within their bases, separate from fabricators and processors by default.

Looking ahead, the 1.2 update, expected several weeks after the 1.1 release, will introduce multiplayer features such as proximity chat and player revive functionality. Later in the year, a major Early Access 2 update is planned, which will include a new region, new creatures, a new vehicle chassis, expanded progression systems, and story content.

Subnautica 2 has achieved considerable success, with its parent company Krafton recently confirming that the entire Unknown Worlds staff will receive bonuses following a settlement with studio leadership. As part of this settlement, Unknown Worlds CEO Ted Gill stepped down. Krafton issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to supporting Subnautica 2 and its ongoing development journey toward a full 1.0 release.
