Unknown Worlds has released the first major update for its early access underwater survival sequel, Subnautica 2. Titled "Adaptive Measures," the 1.1 update introduces several gameplay enhancements, including the ability to stun certain creatures, a feature intended to offer players more defensive options against hostile fauna.

Creative director Anthony Gallegos explained in a developer video that the stun functionality is part of a broader "creature work" pass. A number of creatures will now enter a stun state, allowing players to temporarily incapacitate them using the game's Sonic Resonator for a chance to escape. While this does not permit players to kill creatures, as is the case in the first Subnautica, it addresses player feedback regarding self-defense in dangerous areas.

In conjunction with the stun ability, creature flinching has also been improved to make responses to player interactions more noticeable. These adjustments aim to give players a greater sense of agency in managing creature encounters. The update also refines the behavior of Blight creatures, making their transitions between passive and aggressive states clearer to prevent surprising attacks.

BioMods have also seen significant improvements. BioMod stations are now more readily available, facilitating easier swapping of abilities. Furthermore, a new tool allows players to scan creatures, unlocking additional passive BioMod slots that enable the simultaneous use of multiple passive abilities. Wreck sites have been enhanced with improved visual cohesion and more engaging gameplay elements, including "very light" puzzles. The PDA has received a user interface overhaul for increased clarity and categorization, and now includes a playback function for audio logs, allowing players to listen on demand rather than having them autoplay.

Audio priorities have been adjusted so critical voiceover lines now override less important ones. A new base-building component offering personal storage has also been added.

Unknown Worlds confirmed that further updates are planned. Early access update 1.2 is expected in the coming weeks, focusing on multiplayer features such as proximity chat and player revives. A more substantial "big content drop," designated as the 2.0 update, is slated for release later in the year, promising a new explorable region, creatures, story elements, vehicle chassis, and progression systems.

Subnautica 2 launched into early access to positive reception, with praise for its sense of discovery. The game's development has been accompanied by notable legal disputes between former leadership at Unknown Worlds and its owner, Krafton. Krafton recently agreed to pay promised bonuses to staff and confirmed the departure of studio CEO Ted Gill.
