Unknown Worlds has released the 'Adaptive Measures' update for Subnautica 2, a patch that focuses on enhancing player experience with quality-of-life improvements and addressing a long-standing player request: a means to defend against the game's aggressive aquatic life. While the developer has consistently maintained that Subnautica is not designed as a combat-heavy experience, players have sought ways to protect themselves from persistent attackers.
The 'Adaptive Measures' update provides two primary methods for deterring aggressive creatures. The Sonic Resonator tool can now be used to stun many creature types, causing them to float away from the player. Additionally, striking creatures with the Survival Multitool now triggers more effective flinch animations, offering a better opportunity to escape. These additions allow players to fight back against aggressors without resorting to lethal force.
Beyond defensive capabilities, the update expands the game's explorable areas with the addition of two new Biolab locations, bringing the total to six. These can now be found in the Coral Gardens and Axum Ruins. The patch also introduces a system where scanning creatures with the Bioscanner, after acquiring a specific tool, can unlock additional passive BioMod slots, allowing for more concurrent passive abilities. Creative mode now unlocks all Biomods by default, and unlock badges have been added to display newly acquired items in the Biolab.
Exploration within the game's wrecks has also seen significant improvements. While specific details were not elaborated on, players can expect more traversal and oxygen puzzles, enhanced visual cohesion, and adjusted rewards to better align with these changes. The developer has also standardized visual language on doors and buttons within wreck interiors and applied general cleanup and adjustments across these environments.
Quality-of-life enhancements extend to base building and player mobility. The Vehicle Dock and Fabricator have been adjusted to improve placement ease, especially in smaller rooms and when encountering obstructions. The size of the Vehicle Dock platform and rails has been reduced to save space. A new storage base buildable has been introduced, which does not contribute to nearby crafting systems, allowing for a dedicated space to store items separately from recipe completion.
For further immersion and accessibility, the update includes a field-of-view (FOV) slider in the game's settings. The databank entries have been reorganized, with further UI and layout changes anticipated in future updates. Other additions include new art assets for storage caches and a buildable World Tree Relic decoration. Audiologs no longer auto-play, and unlocked entries now provide a notification and are added to the PDA for later replay.
Unknown Worlds has stated that a larger content drop is planned for later this year, which is expected to introduce new creatures, progression systems, and story expansions. The full patch notes detail numerous bug fixes, performance improvements, and minor adjustments across various game systems, including fauna behavior, resource balancing, and UI elements.
