Unknown Worlds has announced its most significant update yet for Subnautica 2, dubbed 'Early Access 2.0.' This upcoming patch aims to enhance the underwater survival experience with a story expansion, new creatures, and an entirely new region comprised of five distinct biomes. A new 'Tadpole' chassis, featuring arms and legs, will also be added to the game.
Creative Director Anthony Gallegos described Early Access 2.0 as the most substantial update since the game's initial early access launch. He also teased that the new region will be "one of our scariest regions we've ever done." While a release window for Early Access 2.0 has not been provided, Gallegos indicated that more details will be shared through a series of vlogs featuring other development team members.
The update has been largely shaped by player feedback, with the return of a long-requested round room base component highlighted as a key addition. However, the lack of a concrete release date has led to some frustration among players who are concerned about the game's overall early access duration. Some players have expressed dismay at the prolonged early access period, questioning the acceptance of such timelines in game development.
The Steam page for Subnautica 2 indicates an expected early access period of around two to three years, suggesting that the development schedule is not being significantly delayed by the introduction of Early Access 2.0. Despite some player hesitation, the game is noted to be in a solid state, with the upcoming update intended to provide a compelling reason for those on the fence to finally dive in.
