Subnautica 2 Teases "Scariest" New Region, Mech, and Early Access 2.0 Update

Unknown Worlds has announced that Subnautica 2 is embarking on its "voyage to Early Access 2.0." This next major update will introduce what the developers are calling the "scariest" region ever created for the underwater survival game, alongside a host of other new features.

Creative director Anthony Gallegos revealed details in a video posted to the Subnautica YouTube channel. The upcoming update will feature multiple new biomes within this unsettling new region, as well as story expansions and new behaviors for Leviathan class creatures. Players can also expect a new Frog chassis for the tadpole submersible, effectively a pilotable mech.

Navigation is also receiving an upgrade with the addition of an underwater dash ability for players equipped with fins. This new mechanic allows for rapid forward propulsion with a single button press, a significant enhancement over the previous requirement of obtaining a specific biomod.

Base building will see new options, including a round room, though further details on these additions will be revealed in subsequent deep dive videos. A specific release date for "Early Access 2.0" has not yet been provided, nor has a release window been hinted at.

This update marks a substantial evolution for the popular survival adventure game, which saw considerable success following its earlier launch. The franchise has also been the subject of corporate attention, with Krafton expressing interest in developing Subnautica into a major IP after the game surpassed five million sales. This corporate interest followed a legal dispute between Unknown Worlds' founders and Krafton's CEO concerning a substantial bonus package tied to the game's performance.
