Unknown Worlds has released version 1.2 of Subnautica 2's early access build, introducing a suite of co-op focused features including proximity voice chat, player revives, and inventory trading. These additions address significant player feedback received since the game's early access launch on May 14th.

The update, detailed by creative director Anthony Gallegos, prioritizes player interaction within the game's alien ocean environment. Proximity voice chat allows players to communicate more immersively, with audio quality degrading based on distance, simulating natural sound propagation. This is complemented by a selection of emotes, though their utility may be reduced by the new voice chat capabilities. Inventory trading allows players to directly access and swap items from each other's backpacks when in close proximity, maintaining an in-universe feel without magical item transfer.

A key new mechanic is the ability for players to revive fallen companions. Instead of immediately respawning at their base, downed players have a grace period during which other players can reach them and share oxygen to bring them back to life, preserving their equipment. To aid in group identification, two new pioneer skins and additional suit colors have been added.

Beyond co-op enhancements, the update introduces a 'tracking tag' device, functioning similarly to a real-world item tracker. This tag can be placed in containers or carried, and improves the black box location when a player dies, making loot recovery easier. UI improvements include better distance-based icon display and other tweaks to flora and fauna. The patch notes also hint at a potential pedal-powered underwater vehicle.

The update's full patch notes detail numerous other gameplay adjustments, including new animations for various creatures, revised models, and improved environmental effects. Base building has seen an overhaul with enhanced placement UI and functionality for the trashcan. Tool and equipment changes include adjustments to the Feedback Resonator's interaction with creatures and the addition of Acid source indicators on the Scanner HUD.

Significant additions and fixes also span the user interface, with clearer signal displays and persistent scroll positions in menus. Art and visual effects have been improved across various environments, and new music tracks have been added to specific zones. The update also includes performance improvements, new frame generation modes for RTX 5000 series cards, and the ability to run VSync and DLSS Frame Generation simultaneously. Numerous bug fixes address issues ranging from creature AI and environmental clipping to multiplayer synchronization and save file stability.
