Unknown Worlds has released the first major update for Subnautica 2, titled "Adaptive Measures," which introduces a significant change to how players can interact with the game's aquatic life. This update allows players to stun fish using the Sonic Resonator tool, a direct response to player feedback during the game's early access period. The update addresses a point of contention within the player base, where some have expressed a desire for more aggressive interactions with the game's creatures, while others prefer the existing non-lethal approach.

As explained by game design lead Anthony Gallegos in an update vlog, the Sonic Resonator has been modified to induce stun states in many creatures. When struck with the tool, fish will visibly signal that they have been stunned, becoming limp but remaining alive. This change aims to provide players with a sense of creature mitigation without resorting to lethal force. Furthermore, creature flinch animations have been refined to offer clearer visual cues when a creature is reacting to an interaction and preparing to flee.

Subnautica 2, which launched in early access in May, has seen considerable success, selling over 4 million copies. The developers have emphasized the importance of community feedback in shaping the game's development. Creative media producer Scott MacDonald stated in an April interview that Unknown Worlds aims to integrate player input early in the development cycle, believing it leads to more successful outcomes. The game has already evolved significantly through various hotfixes and this substantial update, with its full 1.0 launch anticipated to be two to three years away. The roadmap indicates that the Early Access 1.2 update is the next significant addition, though a specific release date has not yet been announced.
