Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has received a new patch, version 13.0.5, which focuses on addressing online play. According to Nintendo's support website, the update fixes "behavior that occurs when invalid data is sent or received in online battles." The exact nature of this "invalid data" remains unclear, though some community members speculate it may target the use of unofficial modifications.

This update arrives as other major Nintendo titles have seen more substantial feature additions. For instance, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe recently received its 4.0.0 update, which introduced features intended for the Switch 2, including support for up to eight players in split-screen, camera integration, reduced loading times, and higher resolutions. Pikmin 3 Deluxe also saw a similar update enhancing its capabilities for the newer hardware.

The contrast between these updates and the latest for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has led to disappointment among fans, who had hoped for new content or Switch 2-specific enhancements for Ultimate. Desired additions for a potential Switch 2 version or update include new characters, additional stages, improved resolution, and the implementation of rollback netcode.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's direct support for the Switch 2 has been minimal. An earlier update in June 2025 specifically addressed an issue where online matches involving Mii Fighters would terminate prematurely if one player was using a Switch 2. Development for new content for Ultimate concluded in 2021 with the addition of Sora from Kingdom Hearts, which marked the end of its DLC plans.

While the latest game from Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai, Kirby Air Riders, launched in November without any planned DLC, the possibility of a new entry in the Smash Bros. series remains a hope for fans. However, many acknowledge that Sakurai could benefit from a break after extensive work on the franchise.
