The DC Universe film Supergirl is slated for a digital release in North America on July 28. This comes after the movie experienced a disappointing run in theaters, earning only $121 million globally against its reported production and marketing budgets.

Following its digital debut, Supergirl will be available for purchase and rental on platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango. A 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release is scheduled for September 8.

Starring Milly Alcock as Supergirl/Kara Zor-El, the film was intended to build on the momentum from the previous year's DCU release, Superman. However, it failed to capture audience interest, grossing $68 million worldwide after its June 26 premiere. With an estimated $170 million production budget and $120 million marketing budget, the studio would have needed approximately $300 million to break even, a target the film did not approach.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran acknowledged the box office shortfall, stating that while Supergirl did not meet expectations, it is part of a larger, long-term strategy for DC Studios. The studio remains confident in its broader plans, which include the upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns in August, Clayface in October, and the Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow in 2027.

Alcock is expected to reprise her role as Supergirl in future DCU projects, including Man of Tomorrow. The film takes place after Superman and introduces other characters like Lobo, portrayed by Jason Momoa. Details about Man of Tomorrow suggest a plot where Superman and Lex Luthor must collaborate against the threat of Brainiac, with the main cast from Superman returning. The inclusion of Supergirl raises speculation about the potential formation of the Justice League.

Supergirl digital and physical releases will include over 90 minutes of bonus features. These extras delve into the making of the film, the adaptation process from the comic book "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," production design, character creation, the filming of a major action sequence, Jason Momoa's portrayal of Lobo, the film's musical score, a guide to the planets visited in the movie, and the relationship between Supergirl and Krypto. An animated short titled "Krypto Saves the Day: Coastal Catastrophe" will also be included, alongside deleted scenes.
