The DC Studios film Supergirl, which arrived in theaters earlier this year, will begin streaming on HBO Max on September 10. The movie, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, failed to achieve significant critical or commercial success, grossing only $126 million globally during its theatrical run.

The film follows Supergirl as she becomes involved in a pursuit of the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill after he poisons Krypto. This investigation leads Kara to a young girl named Ruthey, who enlists Kara's aid in a quest for revenge, revealing that Krem was responsible for her father's death. The narrative, inspired by "True Grit," sees the unlikely pair traverse the galaxy on their shared mission.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the story draws from the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series by Tom King, who is a key figure in James Gunn's new DC Universe. Despite Alcock's performance, the film's execution and overarching story have been noted as lacking.

Polygon's review indicated that "where Gunn’s Superman set a high bar for weirdness and unexpected ways of reimagining familiar characters, Supergirl strolls under that bar without ever coming close to touching it." This suggests that the DCU may be developing a distinct identity, though it might not be as novel as initially suggested by Superman.

Nevertheless, Milly Alcock is confirmed to reprise her role as Supergirl. She is slated to appear in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for release on July 9, 2027. She will join returning cast members from Superman and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, who can currently be seen in the Lanterns television series.
