Following a subdued theatrical performance, DC Studios' "Supergirl" has ascended to the number one position on HBO Max's U.S. movies chart. The film, which debuted on the streaming service on September 10, is now outperforming titles such as "Practical Magic," "Fuze," "Band of Brothers: Legacy," and "The Last Samurai."
However, "Practical Magic," a film released nearly 30 years ago, is reportedly challenging "Supergirl" for the top spot worldwide on the streaming platform, according to FlixPatrol. This surge for the older film is attributed to the recent theatrical release of "Practical Magic 2."
"Supergirl" was released in theaters on June 26 and grossed $126.4 million against an estimated production budget of $170 to $186 million. Profitability for films typically requires earnings to double their production budget, especially when factoring in marketing expenses. Despite its box office performance, the film may still recoup losses through streaming and rental revenue, a path taken by many movies with similar theatrical challenges. Milly Alcock's portrayal of Supergirl received critical praise, but the film itself garnered mixed reviews, which likely contributed to its limited box office success.
"Supergirl" serves as a follow-up to 2025's "Superman" and centers on Kara Zor-El, cousin to Kal-El, as she navigates life on Earth. Adopting the Supergirl persona, she struggles to adapt to the planet, spending significant time in space. During an interstellar adventure, she encounters a formidable space bandit whose actions lead her on a quest to find an antidote and prevent a young woman named Ruthye from enacting revenge.
This film is the second entry in James Gunn's DC Universe (DCU) and is part of the "Gods and Monsters" chapter. The DCU plans to continue its slate with the upcoming horror film "Clayface," scheduled for theatrical release on October 23, followed by a direct sequel to "Superman" titled "Man of Tomorrow," set for July 9, 2027.
