Robert Henrysson, CEO of Supermassive Games, has announced his departure from the studio, effective Monday. Henrysson, who led the developer behind titles such as The Quarry, Until Dawn, and The Dark Pictures Anthology for over two years, stated on LinkedIn that the decision marks the end of a "very rewarding chapter." He is also stepping down from his role as a partner in the studio's parent company, Nordisk Film, where he joined in 2022.

Supermassive Games is renowned for its cinematic horror titles, with 2015's Until Dawn achieving significant critical acclaim and defining the studio's signature style of player-driven narratives where choices impact character survival. This format was further explored in The Dark Pictures Anthology and 2022's The Quarry, though the reception to individual entries in the anthology has varied.

The studio has experienced several leadership and structural changes in early 2024. Supermassive's co-founders, Joe and Pete Samuels, both departed the company in January. Pete Samuels, who had served as CEO for 15 years and was Henrysson's predecessor, left following a studio restructuring that reportedly put 90 roles at risk. In February, 36 employees were laid off, and the studio's upcoming sci-fi horror title, Directive 8020, was delayed. Directive 8020, which draws inspiration from films like The Thing and Alien, was released in May to mixed reviews, with one assessment calling it "a missed opportunity for the series to prove it's more than just a B-movie in video game form."

Supermassive's output has frequently been compared to the success of Until Dawn. The original game has spawned spin-offs, a remaster, and a film adaptation. A sequel, Until Dawn 2, was announced during a June 2026 PlayStation State of Play event. This new installment, slated for a 2025 release, is being developed by Firesprite Games and will feature a new cast and narrative focused on ghost hunters exploring an abandoned tropical island. The announced cast includes Dacre Montgomery, Neil Newbon, Gavin Leatherwood, and Tanner Buchanan.
