Sword World RPG English Crowdfunding Surpasses $2 Million in First Day

The first official English localization of Japan's popular tabletop role-playing game, Sword World RPG, has achieved a remarkable milestone, raising over $2 million in its first 24 hours on BackerKit. The campaign, managed by Mugen Gaming, a company specializing in localizing Japanese tabletop games, launched on October 20 and has already surpassed its initial funding goals.

Sword World RPG originated from Group SNE, the creators behind the Chronicles of Lodoss War franchise. The game's roots trace back to the late 1980s when Group SNE, initially inspired by Dungeons & Dragons upon its arrival in Japan, began creating their own tabletop experience. When TSR, D&D's publisher at the time, restricted their fan-published reports, the group developed Sword World RPG, which subsequently became highly popular in Japan, reportedly overshadowing D&D's presence there. This marks the first official English localization for the long-standing title.

Mugen Gaming first announced its intention to localize Sword World RPG in English in 2025. Founders Shawn and Ai Naminm-Davison recounted a chance encounter with Group SNE members at the SPIEL tabletop game fair in Germany as the catalyst for the project, which had been hindered by licensing complexities involving both Group SNE and Kadokawa. Over the past year, Mugen Gaming has cultivated a community around the game, evident in the rapid success of the BackerKit campaign, which has now raised over $2.7 million.

The crowdfunding initiative is set to fund the complete localization, design, and printing of the Sword World 2.5 Core Rules. Mugen Gaming is collaborating closely with the original Japanese creators, and Shunsuke Nakashige, an anime director known for his work on series like Solo Leveling and Sword Art Online, is serving as art director.

Hitoshi Yasuda, president of Group SNE, previously explained Sword World's appeal in Japan as stemming from its affordability, ease of learning, story-driven nature, and a blend of Western and Japanese fantasy aesthetics. He expressed hope that the game will resonate similarly with an international audience, highlighting its flexible multi-class system and potential for diverse character options and narrative development. The game employs a 2d6 dice system, distinct from D&D's, but shares familiar elements with fans of Japanese RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, many of which were influenced by Sword World and the Lodoss War series.
