Take-Two CEO's Reaction to GTA 6 Delays Revealed

The road to Grand Theft Auto VI's release has been marked by significant delays, with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick's reaction to the second postponement of the highly anticipated title now coming to light.

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19, a date that arrived after considerable development challenges. Jennifer Kolbe, head of publishing, recounted the moments when the development team informed her of necessary delays. Initially targeting a 2025 release, the team had to communicate a shift to May 2026. Months later, a subsequent call to Zelnick revealed a further delay to November 2026 was required to fully realize Rockstar's ambitious vision for the game.

"I think he said, ‘You’re kidding. Please tell me you’re kidding,’" Kolbe told Bloomberg, recalling Zelnick's response. "But once we talked through why, he got it." Kolbe expressed gratitude for Zelnick's understanding, noting that executives in similar situations might have pressured teams to find ways to meet earlier deadlines, a scenario she described as detrimental to development.

Zelnick himself commented on the nature of game development delays, suggesting that such postponements can be a "wise investment in time and financial resources" when they lead to achieving a desired level of perfection. Despite the November 19 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the development team acknowledges that GTA 6 is a fluid project. Phil Hooker, head of development, stated that the game is "never completely settled" and that Rockstar does not operate with an "exact blueprint," with changes even occurring in the final months of development.

While no one anticipates further delays, Take-Two is scheduled to release its next earnings report on November 10, at which point the November 19 release date is expected to be reiterated. Physical copies of GTA 6, which will contain a code rather than a disc, will be available at retailers on November 12, a week before the game officially unlocks.
