Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto 6, has initiated legal proceedings to unmask the individual known as 'Cyberleek,' the hacker responsible for leaking gameplay footage of Rockstar Games' highly anticipated title. Subpoenas have been issued to Microsoft and Discord in a federal court effort to gather information about the leaker.
Utilizing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), Take-Two aims to uncover Cyberleek's identity across platforms including Discord, GitHub, and any services potentially linked to Microsoft accounts such as OneDrive and Xbox. The publisher believes it has identified several Discord handles and servers associated with the hacker, including "CYBERLEEK" and "CINEMATICROCKSTAR," and the server "Ødyssey.gg."
The subpoenas demand extensive data from Discord, including all identifying information for members of specific Discord servers during a defined period, backend server metadata, original message logs, IP access logs, email addresses, phone numbers, connected accounts, registration timestamps, linked services, and device identifiers. Similar information is sought from Microsoft, which owns GitHub and Xbox. This includes internal investigation records concerning the 'cyberleek' persona, user identification details, account information, IP addresses, phone numbers, linked accounts, device identifiers, and content related to Grand Theft Auto or Rockstar from associated OneDrive accounts.
Both Microsoft and Discord are mandated to provide the requested documentation by September 4 at 10 a.m. EDT. The news of Take-Two's legal action was initially reported by Kotaku.
Take-Two has been actively working to remove leaked content related to Grand Theft Auto 6. Despite efforts to delete accounts and videos associated with Cyberleek across various websites, the hacker has continued to threaten further leaks. The leaked gameplay clips have featured one of the game's protagonists, Jason, engaging in typical Grand Theft Auto-style activities. The hackers have cited several grievances against Rockstar Games, including the decision for Grand Theft Auto 6 to be a digital-only release.
Fans will receive an official, extended look at Grand Theft Auto 6 on August 27, when Rockstar Games and Netflix are scheduled to release a preview of the game. Grand Theft Auto 6 is slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19.
