Take-Two Interactive is pursuing legal channels to unmask the individual responsible for leaking extensive footage of Grand Theft Auto 6, a move that has raised concerns about user privacy. The publisher has requested subpoenas that could compel Microsoft and Discord to hand over identifying information for thousands of users.
The publisher's legal team is seeking all identifying details associated with accounts that communicated on specific Discord servers during a particular timeframe. This information includes account IDs, registration emails, IP addresses, phone numbers, linked accounts, and any device identifiers. Take-Two is particularly interested in content related to Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar, or the identified leaker, Cyberleek.
This legal action stems from the unauthorized release of development footage from Grand Theft Auto 6, a situation Take-Two is reportedly attempting to rectify. The subpoena, approved but not yet served as of August 21, could potentially grant the publisher access to the personal data of a significant number of users, regardless of their involvement in the leak.
Discord has stated that it has not yet been served with the subpoena. A spokesperson for the platform indicated that upon receipt, Discord will review the legal request's validity and scope before determining its response. The potential implications of the subpoena have led to unease among members of the affected Discord communities, including one with approximately 5,600 members and another associated with content creator DarkViperAU, which boasts over 100,000 members.
