South Korean studio Boundary and publisher Krafton are developing Tarae: The Unbound, an isometric action RPG that aims to deliver visceral combat reminiscent of genre titans like Diablo and Path of Exile. An early hands-on experience with the game at Gamescom revealed a strong foundation, particularly in its combat mechanics and boss design.
Tarae is rooted in Buddhist mythology and offers players a choice of distinct classes. During the preview, the Samurai class was explored, focusing on close-quarters melee combat. The gameplay incorporates a stamina bar, a dodge roll, and healing potions, all contributing to a sense of impactful engagement. Each sword swing provides satisfying audio-visual feedback, and a range of abilities further enhances the experience.
Two particular abilities stood out during the preview. The first is a charging slash that effectively conveys a sense of weight and power, avoiding the common pitfall of feeling floaty. The combined efforts of animators, visual effects artists, and sound engineers work in unison to make these attacks feel impactful. Complementing the melee focus is a throwable dagger. While unremarkable on its own, it allows players to teleport to its location with a button press. This action triggers an area-of-effect damage burst around the character, with timing being key to maximizing its effectiveness.
These core abilities can be further customized with a selection of subskills. While all were unlocked in the demo, only a brief exploration of their impact was possible. The noted modifications were primarily percentile alterations and minor amendments, suggesting a focus on fine-tuning character builds. These options appear to be enticing for players who enjoy in-depth buildcrafting.
The game's enemies are divided into two main types. The first are numerous smaller foes that swarm the player or attack from a distance with projectiles. While not overly challenging, these enemies can still pose a threat if the player becomes careless. The true test comes with the game's boss encounters.
The preview featured two bosses, showcasing a variety of challenging moves. The first, a large toad demon, served as a moderate warm-up. Its rolling attacks and leaps required well-timed dodges to avoid significant damage. The second encounter, against a sorcerer, proved to be genuinely difficult. This fight demanded precise positioning due to a barrage of incoming attacks and introduced an invulnerability phase that could only be overcome by standing in specific lit areas of the arena. The sorcerer's substantial health bar meant the demo concluded before this boss could be defeated, leaving a strong impression of its challenge.
While the full depth of Tarae: The Unbound's character customization and its Eastern mythology aesthetic remain to be seen, the early gameplay offers a promising glimpse. The combat feels solid and engaging, and the boss encounters suggest a significant challenge awaits players. Genre enthusiasts are encouraged to keep an eye on this title as it progresses toward release. This preview was based on a hands-on session at Gamescom, with travel and accommodation provided by Krafton.
