Target has launched a new system for selling Pokémon trading card game (TCG) products, aiming to curb the dominance of bots and give fans a fairer chance at acquiring sought-after items. The change, previously rumored, shifts from a near-instantaneous online drop to a lottery-based purchase system.

Under the new model, customers are given a specific window of time to express interest in a product. Once this period concludes, Target randomly selects winners from the pool of entries. This differs from Walmart's existing lottery system, which typically has a shorter entry window.

One notable distinction is Target's approach to payment. Instead of automatic charges, users are provided a deadline to complete their purchases. This allows winners to select only the specific items they are interested in, particularly if they happen to win multiple lotteries. However, Target warns that items purchased through this system are final and cannot be returned or exchanged. The retailer also notes that if more inventory becomes available, those who were not initially selected will have another opportunity.

The new lottery system is initially being tested on a smaller product: a three-pack blister pack from the Scarlet and Violet: Destined Rivals expansion, priced at $14.99. Target plans to observe the results of this initial rollout before potentially applying the system to more popular or limited items, such as those from the 30th Anniversary collection or Ascended Heroes sets. The entry period for this first drawing closes on November 4.

While a longer entry period might seem beneficial for fans, it also provides scalpers with additional time to create multiple accounts. The ability for users to not be charged automatically is seen as a positive, as it prevents accidental purchases for those entering multiple lotteries. The implementation of this lottery system marks a significant shift from Target's previous method of releasing new Pokémon TCG products, which often led to frustration for fans unable to compete with automated purchasing bots. Fans interested in participating can find the current drawing on Target's website, though users may need to update their Target app to see the new system.
