Target is set to introduce stricter regulations for the upcoming release of the Pokémon 30th Anniversary Trading Card Game (TCG) set on September 16. These new measures aim to manage customer flow, enhance security, and control purchases, reflecting the anticipated high demand for the special collection.
Throughout September, many Target stores have featured prominent displays of Pokémon merchandise, often located near the electronics sections. Leaked documentation indicates that these displays will not be limited to the 30th Anniversary items, but will also include recently released products and exclusive merchandise, such as the Target-exclusive Pokémon Owala water bottles.
Enhanced Security and Line Management
Reports from Target employees and Pokémon restock influencers suggest that the retailer is increasing its security presence for the 30th Anniversary release. While specific rules may vary by location, customers planning to queue early are advised to confirm with their local store. Some locations are expected to deploy additional security personnel to manage potentially long lines and direct traffic. Practices such as reserving spots with empty chairs are reportedly being banned, and some stores may prohibit customers from gathering outside until a specified time, either after closing on September 15 or a few hours before opening on September 16. Furthermore, certain Target stores may limit the number of customers allowed entry at once once the store opens.
Purchase Limits and Store Policies
While Target has not officially announced these changes, retail employees have corroborated the reports. One Target store's internal flyer indicated that some locations might enforce a limit of one item type per customer, a reduction from the typical limit of two. This stricter policy aims to prevent issues seen in the past where customers disregarded posted limits.
Target is not the only major retailer implementing new policies for this release. Best Buy has published release day guidelines emphasizing customer conduct, and some Barnes & Noble locations will delay the sale of 30th Anniversary items until later in the day. Target's comprehensive approach, including special shelving, increased security, revised purchase limits, and stricter line management rules, sets it apart from its competitors for this significant Pokémon TCG debut.
