IDW Publishing is expanding the universe of the 2023 animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem with a new comic book series, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coastal Chaos. The limited series is slated for release this fall and follows the heroic reptiles on a vacation to the Jersey Shore that is interrupted by a formidable foe.

This new series builds on the success of the previous six-issue Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles run, which explored stories connected to the Mutant Mayhem continuity. Coastal Chaos will once again feature the creative team of writer Andrew Joustra and artist Louis Joyce. They aim to capture the spirit of the film while introducing new adventures.

"One of the cool things about these Turtles being public knowledge is the different story settings it opens up, and we get to fully embrace that here," Joyce stated in an exclusive look provided by Polygon. "They're down the beach getting some sun, playing some volleyball and catching some waves!"

Joustra added that the story will see the Turtles and their sensei, Splinter, enjoying their first beach trip since leaving the sewer. Familiar characters Mondo Gecko and Ray Fillet will also be joining them. "I love the dynamic between Mondo and Mikey, so I had to let them catch some waves together," Joustra commented. "Unfortunately for the Turtles, when it comes to the ocean, sharks reign supreme."

The primary antagonist for Coastal Chaos is a new take on Armaggon, a villain originally featured in the late 1980s and early 1990s Archie Comics' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures. This iteration is likely a mutant shark, aligning with the storytelling style of Mutant Mayhem. Armaggon has also appeared in other TMNT media, including the 2012 Nickelodeon animated series and the ongoing IDW comic series.

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coastal Chaos is described as a standalone adventure, similar to the multi-part stories within the previous Tales series. The creative team has been noted for their deep knowledge of TMNT lore, with subtle nods to the franchise's history, such as Michelangelo wearing a swimsuit reminiscent of the 1990 "Sewer Surfer" action figure.

Pre-orders for Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Coastal Chaos are available until August 3, with the first issue scheduled to release on September 9. This comic series serves as a bridge for fans anticipating the animated film sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2, which is set to release on August 13, 2027.
