Tekken 8 Reveals First Look at Baki's Yujiro Hanma, and He's Grotesque

Tekken 8 has offered a first in-game look at Yujiro Hanma, the formidable antagonist from the fighting manga Baki, who is slated to join the game as part of its Season 3 DLC pass. Yujiro Hanma, who is also the father of the series' titular protagonist, Baki, was initially revealed in May via a trailer composed entirely of Baki manga panels. The transition of such a character into the high-fidelity Unreal Engine 5 graphics of Tekken 8 presented a question of how his distinct appearance would be realized.

The answer, as showcased, is a faithful, and some might say grotesque, adaptation. The initial in-game glimpse of Yujiro appeared during Evo France. A trailer revealed a brief tease of his introduction animation, highlighting his exaggerated musculature, unnerving flexibility, and a chilling grin. This portrayal aligns closely with his depiction in the manga, though his presence alongside the established Tekken cast creates a jarring visual contrast.

Yujiro's inclusion raises questions about his gameplay implementation, particularly given his established persona as 'The Strongest Creature on Earth' in the Baki series. Unlike characters in other fighting games who possess overwhelming power but have narrative justifications for potential losses, such as Slayer in Guilty Gear or Saitama in One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows, Yujiro's core characteristic is his inability to lose. Developers will need to address how this fundamental aspect of his character translates into Tekken 8's mechanics. His full gameplay trailer is expected in January, coinciding with the Tekken World Tour finals, which should provide further insight into his fighting style and how this narrative trait is handled.

Beyond his combat prowess, Yujiro shares a disturbing parallel with Tekken's Heihachi Mishima: both characters have a history of subjecting their young sons to extreme 'tests' of resilience, including throwing them off cliffs. This connection further solidifies Tekken's ongoing theme of problematic paternal figures, now extending beyond its original universe.
