Development on Calamity, a widely popular mod for the crafting game Terraria, has been officially shut down. The decision comes in the wake of serious sexual misconduct allegations leveled against the mod's lead developer, Ozzatron.

Calamity is known for significantly expanding Terraria with new bosses, biomes, items, and music, often functioning as an unofficial expansion. However, the mod has been embroiled in controversy, culminating in the development team's announcement to cease all work on the project. The allegations against Ozzatron include claims of participating in an NSFW Discord server with minors present, with leaked screenshots reportedly detailing highly inappropriate conversations.

This marks a recurrence of serious accusations for the mod's leadership, as the previous leader, Fabsol, faced similar allegations of grooming minors in 2022. Beyond the misconduct allegations, Ozzatron has also been accused of manipulative behavior and creating a difficult working environment for team members.

In response to these issues, the remaining mod team has opted to abandon Calamity. They cited that Ozzatron has become unresponsive and is allegedly withholding Patreon funds intended for team contributions. Several team members have also requested that their work be removed from the project, wishing to disassociate themselves from the controversy.

"We’re sure most of you are aware of the troubled past of Calamity's development," the mod team stated in an official Discord announcement. "At this point, many of us have felt personally betrayed time and time again after being promised something better that never ended up coming. We’re just tired at this point, and almost all passion we had for the mod has been soured, with many of us having chosen to leave as a consequence. Most of us want to simply move on and would be far happier working on our own projects that aren’t and won’t be tied to something with what we feel is an irrecoverably tainted reputation."

Faced with the complexities of removing individual assets and the overall damage to the project's reputation, the team concluded that a complete shutdown was the most viable resolution. Some team members also expressed a desire to move on to their own independent projects. The sheer amount of work required to implement asset removal, coupled with the team's exhaustion and desire for a fresh start, led to this decision.

Prominent streamer and content creator xQc reportedly offered to purchase the mod and rehire the development team to continue its creation. However, members of the Calamity mod team have reportedly turned down this offer. This rejection is understandable given the stated wishes of some members to have their work removed and the general sentiment of being ready to move past the project due to its toxic history and negativity.
