Calamity, a highly regarded and expansive mod for the survival crafter Terraria, has officially ceased all development after a decade of operation. The decision stems from serious allegations of grooming and misconduct against the mod's leadership, leading the remaining development team to declare its reputation "irrecoverably tainted."
The announcement, originating from the mod's Discord server, stated that the team has made the "difficult decision" to halt all work on Calamity. The developers cited a decade of "troubled pasts" and a feeling of betrayal, noting that "almost all passion we had for the mod has been soured, with many of us having chosen to leave as a consequence."
These sentiments are largely directed at the mod's absentee owner, Ozzatron, who reportedly took over leadership after the previous leader, Fabisol, faced similar accusations in 2022. Allegations against Ozzatron include deep involvement with and permissiveness towards a NSFW server that allegedly included minors. Evidence suggests that when the server's existence became public around 2020, rules were implemented to enforce an 18+ age limit without removing existing underage users, and some minors who had fled were allegedly reinvited.
Many asset creators for the mod have subsequently requested their contributions be removed. The development team stated that the sheer volume of these removal requests, combined with a lack of personnel, makes it functionally impossible to comply fully. Consequently, ceasing development is seen as the closest achievable action to fulfilling these requests.
Further complicating the situation, Ozzatron has reportedly become unresponsive. A recent message indicated that Ozzatron has been out of communication for over a day, with no word on the compensation owed for labor or the disposition of several thousand dollars in Patreon funds. This has led the team to believe Ozzatron is actively in conflict with them and has no intention of providing payment for their work.
The team expressed a desire to move on to independent projects, free from the association with Calamity's problematic history. The mod's extensive additions, which included new bosses, weapons, and other content on a scale akin to an expansion pack, had made it a celebrated fixture in Terraria's modding community for ten years.
