Square Enix veteran Tetsuya Nomura has urged fans to "let your imagination run wild" regarding the newly announced Kingdom Hearts animated series coming to Disney+. The series was teased during the D23 2026 Disney Entertainment Showcase, which also provided a glimpse into how the upcoming mainline game will incorporate the world of Pixar's Coco.
Details about the anime's plot and its place within Kingdom Hearts' complex narrative remain scarce. Beyond a few words from Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis and some evocative artwork featuring a new Keyblade wielder, information is limited. Nomura himself, rather than clarifying the series' role, instead fueled speculation among fans.
"Production of a Kingdom Hearts animated series has been confirmed," Nomura stated in a message. "I imagine this sudden announcement came as a surprise. You are likely wondering what the series will be about. While I cannot share specific details just yet, I have been holding close consultations with the scenario team—and the art team, when necessary—and we have even created new character designs specifically for this project."
Nomura further elaborated, "I cannot say anything more at this moment, but the single piece of key art released serves as a hint. Please let your imagination run wild as you await further updates."
Fans of the Kingdom Hearts franchise are accustomed to long waits and extensive theorizing, a pattern established by the significant gaps between game releases. Kingdom Hearts 3, for instance, launched 14 years after its predecessor. The forthcoming Kingdom Hearts 4 is slated for a 2027 release, marking an eight-year interval since the last numbered entry, assuming no further delays.
The Disney+ series, however, has no confirmed release date or even a release window. The accompanying artwork simply indicates that it is "coming soon."
"Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination," Davis commented on the announcement. "There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way. And with a creative team that is working closely with the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, our new series will be unmistakably Kingdom Hearts, while giving fans a whole new way to experience the world they love."
Further details about the series may emerge during Disney's upcoming Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts panel at D23. Previously, Kingdom Hearts 4 was shown during a Nintendo Direct, and Disney Animation has not ruled out the possibility of a film based on the series.
