The 10 Most Underrated RPGs of the Last Decade

The role-playing genre is renowned for its ability to weave compelling narratives, introduce players to unforgettable characters, and explore profound themes. While major releases like the latest Final Fantasy installments and anticipated newcomers such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Metaphor: ReFantazio capture significant attention, numerous other exceptional RPGs released over the past ten years have flown under the radar. This list highlights ten of the most underrated RPGs from the last decade, offering a guide to stellar experiences that may have escaped your notice.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Initially released in Japan in 2004 and later localized in North America in 2011, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter received a PC port in 2014. A recent remake revitalizes the classic series with a blend of action and turn-based combat, preserving the rich world and epic scope of its predecessors. A remake of the second chapter was released earlier this year. Despite critical acclaim and a dedicated following, these titles haven't reached the same level of mainstream recognition as behemoths like Final Fantasy.

Harvestella

Square Enix’s Harvestella merges the beloved virtual farming simulation genre with action-RPG elements. Developed by Live Wire, the game features 12 distinct character classes and tasks players with managing a farm while interacting with villagers. It offers deep RPG mechanics, an intriguing plot, and a variety of activities including farming, cooking, crafting, and fishing.

Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk

For fans of classic first-person dungeon crawlers like Wizardry and Etrian Odyssey, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk offers a compelling experience. Originally released on PlayStation Vita in Japan in 2016, it later arrived on Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Players control a magical book, commanding a brigade of puppet soldiers to explore dungeons and uncover a story about reviving a loved one. Its sequel, Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society, was released in 2020.

The DioField Chronicle

Published by Square Enix and co-developed with Lancarse, The DioField Chronicle presents a rich plot focused on the consequences of war, complemented by engaging combat that blends real-time strategy with tactical elements. Despite its pedigree, including character art by Isamu Kamikokuryo of Final Fantasy 12 fame, the game did not achieve widespread recognition. It offers an excellent option for players seeking a tactical RPG experience after titles like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave.

Monark

Monark, developed by Lancarse, is set in Shin Mikado Academy, which is engulfed by a mysterious mist and demonic forces. Players must venture into an Otherworld to combat monsters. While some criticism was leveled at its grinding requirements, the game features strong systems and abilities. Its dark narrative, co-written by Fuyuki Hayashi and overseen by former Shin Megami Tensei staff, and its somber soundtrack contribute to an experience that appeals to players willing to look beyond its rough exterior.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

Launched via Kickstarter in 2020, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was conceived as a spiritual successor to the Suikoden series by Yoshitaka Murayama, who directed the first two games. Developed by Rabbit & Bear Studios, the game largely delivered on its promise. Following Murayama's passing in February 2024, the game was released to critical and player acclaim for its engaging plot and familiar gameplay elements, resonating particularly with Suikoden fans.

CrossCode

With its distinctive 16-bit visuals, CrossCode is an action-RPG set in a futuristic world. It offers fast-paced combat, challenging puzzles, and a unique sci-fi narrative. The game draws inspiration from classic 16-bit RPGs such as Chrono Trigger and Terranigma. Despite receiving enthusiastic reviews upon its 2018 release, CrossCode has remained relatively obscure compared to more mainstream titles.

The Caligula Effect 2

From the creators of Persona and Heroland, The Caligula Effect 2 revisits the concept of being trapped in a virtual world called Mobius. The sequel refines the series' formula with more streamlined combat, improved dungeon design, and enhanced visuals. It provides a polished experience that should appeal to Persona fans looking for a new RPG.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Developed by Dontnod Entertainment, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is set in 1695 North America and follows paranormal investigators Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith. The game explores unconventional themes and an unusual plot, leading to five distinct endings. Despite reportedly underperforming commercially, its unique setting and narrative make it a standout title for action-RPG fans seeking something different.

SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions

SaGa Scarlet Grace initially released on PlayStation Vita in Japan in 2016, but an expanded port, SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions, brought it to a wider audience on multiple platforms in 2019. This enhanced version includes voice acting, new characters, music, and plot elements. It revived the SaGa series, earning critical and player praise, though its sales did not match that of major franchises like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. The franchise is set to continue with Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United in 2027.
