Koei Tecmo has revealed a new video game based on the popular anime series The Apothecary Diaries. Titled The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother, the game promises an experience reminiscent of Capcom's Ace Attorney series, filling a void for fans awaiting a new installment in that franchise. The announcement was made with a full trailer released on YouTube, following a brief showcase during a Nintendo presentation.

The Apothecary Diaries anime follows Mao Mao, an apothecary who becomes entangled in solving mysteries and murders within the Imperial harem. Her extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals, particularly poisons, aids her in these investigations. She is often assisted by Jinshi, a high-ranking eunuch who harbors a clear affection for Mao Mao, in a dynamic that has been compared to the relationship between Dr. House and Dr. Wilson from the medical drama House, M.D.

Original Story and Gameplay

The False Imperial Brother will feature an original story developed in collaboration with the anime series' creator, Hyuganatsu. The plot centers on Mao Mao and Jinshi as they investigate "The Five Mysteries of the Rear Palace." The gameplay is designed to be similar to the Ace Attorney titles, involving crime scene investigation, character interviews, and presenting findings before the Emperor, rather than a judge. The game will also incorporate exploration, resource gathering, and crafting mechanics.

The series, which marked a return to anime for many viewers, is set to begin its third season next month. Fans will be able to immerse themselves further in the world of The Apothecary Diaries when The False Imperial Brother launches in early 2027. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
