Five years after its initial release, the twin-stick action RPG The Ascent is slated to receive a substantial update. Publisher Krafton announced that this update, scheduled for November 2026, aims to enhance the player experience for both solo and co-op modes, addressing issues such as co-op teleportation, the encounter system, save-game reliability, and player progression.
This anniversary update coincides with indications that a sequel to The Ascent may be in development. Krafton's announcement also mentioned plans to "expand The Ascent across new platforms, genres and future sequels." This phrasing has led to speculation about the possibility of a new installment, potentially on new platforms like the Nintendo Switch 2, and even exploration into different game genres. The original The Ascent, released in 2021, was noted for its engaging action, detailed environments, and distinct cyberpunk aesthetic. Despite some criticisms regarding its story and late-game enemy encounters, its core gunplay and violent presentation in a neon-drenched world were praised as a unique co-op experience.
Arcade Berg, co-founder of Neon Giant, expressed pride in the game's reception and acknowledged player feedback. "With Krafton’s support, this update marks a new chapter for the game and for our ambitions for The Ascent as a franchise," Berg stated. The studio, comprising around 20 developers, is also working on another project, No Law, which shares some similarities with Cyberpunk 2077. The success of The Ascent, having reached over 12 million players, provides a strong foundation for future endeavors within the franchise.
