The Blood of Dawnwalker Developed on a $40 Million Budget

Developer Rebel Wolves' recent success with The Blood of Dawnwalker came at a development cost of $40 million, according to a Bloomberg report. This figure places the game within the AA development tier, a notable contrast to the multi-hundred-million-dollar budgets often associated with AAA titles.

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, a game designer known for his work on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, initially worked on early versions of the game with a small team in 2022. Tomaszkiewicz self-funded the project for its first year before NetEase Inc. stepped in to provide funding and acquired a 26% stake in the Warsaw-based studio.

For comparison, IO Interactive's 007 First Light reportedly had a budget exceeding $200 million, and similar figures have been cited for Sony's Marathon and titles like The Last of Us Part 2 and Horizon Forbidden West. The more modest budget for The Blood of Dawnwalker meant a reduced financial risk for Rebel Wolves, NetEase, and publisher Bandai Namco.

The game has garnered positive reception, with Metacritic noting "Generally Favorable" reviews from both critics and users. IGN awarded The Blood of Dawnwalker a 9/10, praising it as "an impressive, bloody cocktail of interesting ideas and well-written characters, making it one of this year’s best open-world RPGs."

Commercially, The Blood of Dawnwalker has also seen significant success. Rebel Wolves stated they are "extremely" pleased with the initial sales figures, which include over 1 million copies sold within its first few days. SteamDB data shows strong player engagement, with the single-player RPG maintaining a healthy concurrent player count after a peak of 78,188 users shortly after its September 3, 2026 launch for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Tomaszkiewicz has aimed to keep Rebel Wolves' growth manageable, with the team expanding from around 90 staff in 2024 to 160 members. This size is considered optimal by Tomaszkiewicz to maintain a creator mindset rather than a purely managerial one, even as the studio works on sequels and potentially new intellectual properties. The studio has also confirmed that New Game Plus mode is currently in development for the debut title.
