Players struggling with The Blood of Dawnwalker in its human form can rest assured they are experiencing the game as intended, according to game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz. Rebel Wolves designed the game so that players "should" feel more powerful as a vampire, with the human form intentionally presenting a greater challenge.
Tomaszkiewicz explained that the concept for the protagonist, the Dawnwalker, was inspired by werewolves, who are typically weaker in human form during the day than they are as beasts at night. This disparity allows the game to present stories with varied antagonists and events without requiring the constant escalation of villain power seen in superhero media. He also noted that playing as a human offers a more grounded experience and can lead to different narrative paths. "It is possible to play and finish the game [as a human], and it makes you always more grounded," Tomaszkiewicz stated.
The power difference is attributed to several mechanical factors. Vampire abilities, such as claw damage, naturally increase with the player's level, negating the need for gear upgrades. In contrast, human characters must find, purchase, or upgrade swords to improve their combat effectiveness. Healing also differs significantly: humans rely on crafted potions, while vampires can heal by biting enemies, consuming blood vials, and regenerating health through a separate segment of their health bar that refills after combat. Vampires also have access to skills that can replace health loss with damage dealt.
While vampires possess more direct combat advantages, the human form offers access to witchcraft abilities during the day, which are not available at night. Tomaszkiewicz acknowledged that these spells are intended to be powerful, ensuring the human form remains viable. "Vampires should always be stronger, but as a human with witchcraft, you should also have strong skills for many reasons," he said. The game must be completable in human form, with no "blockers" preventing progress. Furthermore, offering appealing human-form mechanics discourages players from simply skipping to nighttime gameplay.
Tomaszkiewicz also hinted at multiple ways to finish the game as a human, suggesting choices involving solo play or allies, which may appeal to players who prefer a human-centric ending or simply wish to diversify their gameplay approach. The game's core design emphasizes "freedom of choice," allowing players to determine their own path.
The Blood of Dawnwalker has seen commercial success, selling one million copies within its first three days of release. While initial reviews were generally positive, some players noted performance issues and gameplay quirks. A significant patch is anticipated for early October to address these concerns. The game's time-of-day mechanic, which dictates the power disparity, will not be altered in this update. However, this mechanic was significantly stricter in earlier designs and may not feature in future installments of The Blood of Dawnwalker series.
