The Blood of Dawnwalker Director Open to Removing Divisive Time Mechanic in Sequels

The Blood of Dawnwalker's director, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, has indicated that the game's polarizing time mechanic may not be a mandatory feature in future installments. The system, which imposes a strict time limit for completing objectives and attaches time costs to various actions, has drawn significant criticism from players.

In an interview, Tomaszkiewicz stated that the developer, Rebel Wolves, has not yet decided whether the time mechanic will return. "We will play with it," he explained. "If we will have parts of the story, or the whole story, to which it fits, then we will use it. If we will have stories where it does not fit, we will not force it." He added that the team is exploring other ideas to innovate within the RPG genre. The current implementation in The Blood of Dawnwalker grants players 30 days and nights to rescue a family from a vampire antagonist, with time advancing through quest progression and certain skill expenditures.

Tomaszkiewicz acknowledged the division the mechanic has caused, noting that many players express a desire to experience all game content in a single playthrough without feeling rushed. He also pointed to the existence of a popular mod that removes the time mechanic entirely. Despite the complaints, Tomaszkiewicz defended the mechanic's implementation, stating that it was balanced to allow for approximately 80 percent of the game's content to be completed within the time limit. He also argued that the premise of seeing everything in one playthrough is often false, even in other RPGs like The Witcher, due to choice-based consequences.

He observed that while initial reactions were strongly negative, the sentiment has shifted for some players as more people complete the game and find they have more time than anticipated. Tomaszkiewicz understands that some players will always dislike time mechanics and supports their ability to use mods to disable it. A review of The Blood of Dawnwalker noted that the time mechanic, while having issues, added a sense of urgency often lacking in other RPGs. The full interview is expected to be published soon.
