The Blood of Dawnwalker employs a unique time system where players have 30 in-game days to rescue Coen's family before Brencis enacts his plan. Unlike many open-world games where time advances with real-world progression, time in The Blood of Dawnwalker only moves forward when specific actions are taken.
Each day and night is divided into eight segments, resulting in 16 segments per cycle and a total of 480 segments across the 30-day period. Players consume these segments by engaging in activities such as investigating scenes, interrogating non-player characters, or participating in combat. The game clearly indicates the time cost for each action before the player commits, preventing surprise.
For example, undertaking the "Defeat Bakir's Headhunters" quest costs three time segments. If a player is halfway through the night on day 11, they have four segments remaining before day 12 begins. Completing this quest would leave them with one segment before the day transition.
Some activities not immediately obvious in the journal may trigger the time bar at the top right of the screen to glow. This indicates that the action consumes time segments, with the number of gray segments on the gauge showing the required cost. Engaging in a fight at a soldier camp, for instance, uses one time segment.
Upgrading and Exploration
Beyond quests and combat, upgrading Coen's skills also consumes time. Visiting a shrine to unlock new passive or active abilities at the "perks" section typically costs one time segment, though some upgrades may require zero or two. Despite these costs, most quests remain available for extended periods, suggesting that time segments should be viewed as a valuable currency to invest in character progression. Whether these investments are made through quests, activities, or skill enhancements is a strategic choice for the player.
Crucially, players can explore the world freely without advancing time. As long as key activities are avoided, no time segments will be consumed.
Day/Night Cycle Effects
The time of day significantly impacts the world and available gameplay. Most shops close at night, and pedestrian traffic decreases, altering how certain quests can be approached. While daytime might favor dialogue-based solutions, nighttime could present opportunities for stealth or burglary, potentially leading to the same objective. Some quests are exclusive to either day or night, marked by a sun or moon icon in the journal, respectively.
Coen's abilities also shift with the time. As a vampire at night, he gains enhanced strength, the ability to drain blood, and the Shadowstep ability for teleportation and wall-walking. During the day, in his human form, he can utilize witchcraft abilities.
Players can manually skip time at a shrine, but this action advances the countdown to Brencis' coronation. Timed quests, indicated by a clock icon, will expire if not completed within their given windows. The Blood of Dawnwalker is a narrative RPG where managing time is integral to success.
