The Coalition Aims for Shorter Gaps Between Future Gears of War Titles

The wait for a new Gears of War game has been significant, with the series returning with Gears of War: E-Day on Xbox Series X|S and PC after the release of Gears 5 in 2019. Developers at The Coalition are aiming to shorten the development cycle for future entries in the franchise, suggesting that the seven-year gap seen previously will not be repeated.

Studio head Mike Crump told the BBC that Gears of War: E-Day provides a "great foundation" for subsequent games, adding that "the next game will not take nearly as long" to produce. Crump emphasized the team's focus on delivering a high-quality product that players will enjoy, noting the continuity of experience within the studio's leadership, many of whom have worked together for over two decades. This continuity, he believes, ensures the preservation of institutional knowledge.

Despite recent consolidation and layoffs within Xbox's various studios, The Coalition has reportedly been spared the most severe cuts. However, concerns about future workforce reductions persist, particularly following changes that have seen studios integrated under Bethesda and Activision, and even the Halo series being handed over to a new team at Activision. A new division within Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games is rumored to be developing the next Halo title.

Crump views the success of Gears of War: E-Day not solely through sales figures, but through its impact on the Xbox platform. He stated that the team's goal is to create the best-looking game on Xbox, pushing the hardware to its limits and showcasing the capabilities of the platform to the wider industry. The commercial performance of E-Day, especially considering its release alongside other major titles and its availability on Xbox Game Pass, will be a key indicator of the franchise's future direction.
