The Dark Urge, an origin character in Baldur's Gate 3, presents players with some of the game's most memorable and disturbing dialogue. This amnesiac character grapples with intense bloodlust, and their inner monologue, often voiced by narrator Amelia Tyler, delivers lines that are at turns chilling, heartbreaking, and darkly humorous.
Early Acts of Darkness
Early in Act 1, players encounter Alfira, a tiefling bard. After helping her finish a song, she joins the party. The morning after, however, reveals a horrific scene: Alfira is found dead, brutally murdered, and the Dark Urge is covered in her blood, finding the warmth of it disturbingly familiar. This introduction immediately signals the dark path of a Dark Urge playthrough.
Later in the same act, near the Blighted Village's ruined schoolhouse, the sight of a hopscotch game prompts internal reflection. The Dark Urge, unable to recall their childhood, questions if they were ever innocent or sweet before their descent into bloodlust. This moment contrasts sharply with the character's violent inclinations.
In the Goblin Camp, the Dark Urge's disturbing preferences are highlighted. Upon encountering dwarf parts roasting on a spit, the character remarks on how good they smell, reinforcing their consistent, albeit gruesome, tastes. This is preceded by an interaction in the Emerald Grove where, offered gruel, the Dark Urge admits a preference for "roasted dwarf."
While navigating the Underdark, the Dark Urge is prompted by Sovereign Glut to describe their home. Lacking memories, the character is given the option to fabricate details, illustrating the struggle with their lost identity and the need to conceal their true nature.
Escalating Disturbances
At Grymforge, encountering duergars engaging in what can only be described as "corpse sports" with deep gnomes, the Dark Urge offers a chilling alternative. They list invented games like "Goliath Goatball, Moon Hockey, and Pegasus Polo with corpses," showcasing a macabre imagination.
Act 2 introduces further unsettling dialogue. At the Last Light Inn, when asked for a name by Fist Ulthred, the Dark Urge suggests dark alternatives they've been considering, such as "The Sleepless Knife" and "The Death Dream," which are met with disdain by the guard.
East of Last Light Inn, the Dark Urge encounters a shadar-kai ritualistically questioning a corpse. When asked to assist in prolonging the deceased's suffering, the Dark Urge suggests an unending cycle of killing, a proposition even too extreme for the shadar-kai.
Act 3 Revelations
As Act 3 begins, the Dark Urge's true nature as a Bhaalspawn is often revealed. Interacting with an NPC named Naaber, who is cheerfully singing happy birthday, the Dark Urge can bluntly state they have no birthday because they were "sculpted from a slice of Bhaal's own dead flesh." Despite this grim revelation, Naaber remains unfazed, prompting the Dark Urge to consider a cruel response: cutting out his tongue to stop his bardic endeavors.
These lines collectively paint a picture of a character wrestling with a violent past and a dark destiny, making the Dark Urge origin a particularly impactful and unsettling choice in Baldur's Gate 3.
