Ubisoft's loot-shooter franchise, The Division, is returning to New York City with its upcoming downloadable content, Echoes of Central Park, for The Division 2. While this new expansion will explore the series' darkest narrative to date, its director has stated that it is not intended to set the stage for the anticipated The Division 3.
Since its inception in 2016, The Division series has predominantly been set in iconic American urban environments. The original game depicted a pandemic-ravaged New York City, followed by its sequel, The Division 2, which shifted the setting to Washington, D.C. Subsequent expansions, Warlords of New York and Battle for Brooklyn, brought players back to New York, exploring its Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn areas respectively. The forthcoming Echoes of Central Park will continue this trend by introducing Central Park as a playable location, a significant area that has only been referenced in previous titles.
A New Thematic Direction
The Division 2's creative director, Yannick Banchereau, explained in a recent interview that the development team aims to introduce fresh elements with each DLC to appeal to a broader audience. "With this one, we went with the darker tone and a different take on The Division fantasy," Banchereau told Polygon. He elaborated that Echoes of Central Park will lean into an almost horror-inspired theme, exploring the urban legends and fears that emerge when communities lack access to technology and information. This approach, he noted, is a departure from the typical Clancy-esque universe, creating a more oppressive and fear-based narrative.
Beyond Central Park, the DLC will also feature the Upper West Side neighborhood, a location chosen for its typical portrayal in lighthearted media, offering a stark contrast to The Division's usual grim atmosphere. Banchereau highlighted the team's commitment to authentic environmental design, drawing on historical and cultural aspects of the chosen locations.
Narrative Independence from The Division 3
Despite the ongoing development of The Division 3, announced in 2023, Banchereau was firm in stating that Echoes of Central Park is not designed as a direct precursor. "The Division 3 is its own thing and we are not working on The Division 2 with The Division 3 in mind," he clarified. The focus for the current development cycle remains on supporting and expanding The Division 2. While Ubisoft has faced some shifts in its broader The Division strategy, including the cancellation of The Division Heartland and the release of The Division Resurgence on mobile and PC, the company appears committed to extending the life of The Division 2 with content like Echoes of Central Park.
Ubisoft has announced that more details and a gameplay reveal showcase for The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park will be presented on September 24 at 12 p.m. EDT. A release date for the DLC has not yet been confirmed.
