Bethesda has confirmed that a patch for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is in development, aiming to address persistent performance issues that have affected the PC version since its July 2025 launch. The upcoming update will incorporate optimizations that were developed for the game's recent Nintendo Switch 2 release.
Since its debut, Oblivion Remastered has faced criticism for its technical performance. Digital Foundry noted significant problems in May 2026, including stuttering in the open world, frame rate drops, and a gradual performance degradation over longer play sessions, possibly due to a memory leak. A follow-up assessment in May 2027 found that many of these same issues remained.
These technical shortcomings have contributed to a decline in player sentiment on Steam, with the 'Recent Reviews' rating dropping to 'Mixed' despite an overall 'Mostly Positive' score. Some players have expressed frustration over the lack of updates for nearly a year, with one negative review labeling the game as "abandonware."
In response to player feedback, Bethesda stated via Twitter that "The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has a number of optimizations that we are looking into bringing to other platforms and we will share more when we are able." While the announcement is brief, it has been met with cautious optimism from the community, with fans expressing relief that the developer has finally acknowledged the situation after a prolonged period of silence.
Despite the technical difficulties, Oblivion Remastered, a project developed in collaboration with Virtuos utilizing Unreal Engine 5, has been commercially successful for Bethesda. The game has attracted over 9 million players, and Bethesda development chief Todd Howard previously expressed satisfaction with its performance in December.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Oblivion Remastered is now available.
