The beloved science fiction series The Expanse is making a return, this time as a video game titled The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Developed by Owlcat Games, known for titles such as Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, the game is slated for release in spring 2027. It was recently showcased at Gamescom with a new trailer and a hands-on preview.
Osiris Reborn is set concurrently with the first three seasons of the television series, between the novels Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War. The game will explore the interplanetary politics of a solar system on the verge of conflict. Players do not need prior knowledge of The Expanse's extensive lore to enjoy the game, though familiar characters like Captain James Holden, voiced and likenessed by Steven Strait, will make appearances. The narrative unfolds in real-time for the player's customizable mercenary character.
A key focus for Owlcat Games has been ensuring scientific accuracy. The development team collaborated with former NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao to realistically incorporate space elements. This includes features like magnetic boots for zero-gravity movement. "We hope that our approach to blending realism with gameplay considerations will make players experience something engaging and truly immersive," stated Yuliya Chernenko, game design producer for Osiris Reborn.
Early previews suggest that Osiris Reborn will emphasize player choice and consequence, akin to an immersive sim. Polygon's preview highlighted that the game captures the essence of The Expanse, which prioritizes political intrigue and the human element behind conflicts over pure action. Decisions made by the player are intended to be as impactful as combat proficiency.
Fans interested in experiencing The Expanse: Osiris Reborn early can gain beta access by purchasing the Miller's Pack for $79.99 or the Collector's Edition for $289 through the game's official website. This beta access will remain available until the game's official launch.
